Head of Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, Scotland. Director of the University of Victoria Phonetics Laboratory.
Dr Janet Beck qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh. She also has a degree in Biological Science and a PhD in Phonetics from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Janet Beck was trained in Phonetics by Sandy Hutcheson and John Laver. She is currently Head of Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. Dr John Esling has a BA in History and Languages from Northwestern University, Chicago (1971), an MA in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from the University of Michigan (1972), and a PhD in Linguistics (Phonetics) from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (1978). John Esling was trained in Phonetics by Ian Catford and Kenneth Pike at the University of Michigan and was a student of David Abercrombie and John Laver at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is currently president of the International Phonetic Association.
